Footsteps to Freedom: Exploring the Underground Railroad Legacy Tour

Step into history with the Footsteps to Freedom Tour, an educational and inspiring journey along the Underground Railroad in the Calumet region. This free event, guided by leading experts, brings to life the stories of Freedom Seekers who risked everything for liberty.

  • Meeting Point: Beaubien Woods Boat Launch (134th & Little Calumet River)
  • Guides: Historian Larry McClellan and Tom Shepherd of the Midwest Underground Railroad Network (MURN)
  • Cost: FREE, courtesy of the Forest Preserves of Cook County

Journey Through History

Learn how hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of Freedom Seekers traveled through south Chicagoland before the Civil War. Hear compelling accounts of the Jan & Aagje Ton, local abolitionists who offered food, shelter, and refuge near Beaubien Woods.

Professor Larry McClellan, the foremost authority on the Underground Railroad in Northern Illinois, will share his deep knowledge of this movement. Tom Shepherd, longtime advocate with MURN, will add powerful insights to connect the stories to the land you’ll explore.


What to Expect on the Tour

This experience combines moderate hiking and short bus rides to follow the Freedom Trail. The route lasts approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, beginning at the Beaubien Woods Boat Launch. Along the way, you will:

  • Walk in the footsteps of those who sought freedom.
  • Visit historic sites tied to the Underground Railroad.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the Calumet region’s role in this national story.

Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes to fully enjoy the journey.
